I am delighted to hear that Churches Together, the ecumenical group co-ordinating the work of the Cobham churches, is about to launch a food bank in the town. The aim is that it will start work in September.
It has been a central part of my work as a councillor for Cobham Fairmile to highlight the fact that there is a considerable element of poverty in Cobham. Not just comparative poverty, but the sort of disadvantage that registers on the national scale. Most of these people live in the ward which I represent. All the newspaper coverage of Cobham focusses on the “Beverley Hills of England” tagline and the footballers and their mansions. Whilst we are very fortunate to live in a wealthy areas we forget the less well-off at our peril. You cannot have a happy settled community unless those who have are prepared to help those that do not and for these reasons the Food Bank will have my wholehearted support.
